My Story

Before becoming a mum, I was proud of the career I had built. Working in human resources within local government, helping create great places to work, was a significant part of who I was. When I went on parental leave, I knew I wanted to stay connected to my work. While many people expected me to completely step away, that wasn't what felt right for me.

As I navigated the early weeks and months of motherhood, returning to work when my daughter was 7 months old, I found myself facing a reality I hadn't expected. I felt unsupported through many parts of the transition and struggled with society's expectations of motherhood with the kind of mother, and professional, I wanted to be. Work still mattered deeply to me, but motherhood had changed me in ways I didn't yet understand.

It wasn't until my daughter was around 18 months old that I recognised my values had shifted. Through reflection, coaching, the support of my partner, and giving myself permission to do things differently, I realised I didn't have to choose between my career and my family.

Today, I work four days a week, keeping Wednesdays to spend with my daughter. I still love my work, but I also value having dedicated, quality time with her. That decision transformed my experience of both work and motherhood, allowing me to find greater balance, fulfilment, and peace.

My own journey showed me that becoming a mother is about so much more than having a baby, it's a profound life transition that deserves greater understanding and support. That's why I created Thriving Mums: to help women navigate matrescence, parental leave, and returning to work with greater confidence, clarity, and intention. Because I believe you shouldn't have to choose between building a meaningful career and being the mum you want to be.
